About the test

Assertiveness is the ability to stand up for yourself calmly and confidently without violating other people’s boundaries. This test helps you assess how much you tend to express your opinion openly, protect your personal boundaries, say no, ask for what you need and respond to unfair treatment without excessive submissiveness or aggression.

It covers everyday situations, from complaining about a badly cooked dish and returning a faulty product to disagreeing with a respected speaker or starting a conversation with a stranger.

Methodology

The test is based on the Rathus Assertiveness Schedule (RAS), a classic questionnaire by Spencer Rathus for assessing assertive behaviour.

The statements describe how you usually behave with other people, some of them assertive and some the opposite, and your agreement with them is combined into one overall measure. The app slightly modernises some statements to make the test easier to complete while keeping the idea, structure and logic of the original method.

You read each statement and rate how much you agree with it, from strongly disagree to strongly agree.

Results

After completing the test you receive an overall level of assertiveness, from low to high, with a short definition of assertiveness and a description of how your level tends to show up: in refusing, complaining, asking for help and expressing disagreement with someone in authority.

The result helps you tell a conscious compromise from automatically giving in, and can be supplemented with personalized AI analysis in the Who Am I? app.
